Abstract
The first part of the present study examines the structure and function of the plot of L'Etourdi and George Dandin. It explains how structural patterning enables Molière to dramatize the gap between human wish and attainment. Despite the pain or embar‐rassment associated with unfulfilled expectations, Molière keeps his plays within the bounds of the comic. The second part of the essay, then, explains how the playwright relies on patterning to prevent spectators from becoming emotionally involved with the characters and their dilemmas.
