Abstract
Abstract: Voltaire more-or-less ended his days as a scientific writer with a novelette about Micromegas [1, I. O. Wade, Voltaire's ‘Micromegas’: A study in the Fusion of Science, Myth and Art. Princeton University Press, Princeton (1950)]—first published in 1752—the name of a mythological individual of gigantic size who engaged in inter-planetary travel to satisfy his curiosity. It is a short work, in many ways comparable to, and by some believed to be derived from, parts of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels [2, Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels. Oxford University Press World's Classics, Oxford (1988)], which was published in London in 1726. Both stories are fantasies, primarily satires on late 17th and early 18th century science and philosophy, not usually recognized as such by the great mass of readers but which we here recount and appreciate, each in the manner intended initially and not merely as the highly popular, highly successful imaginative fiction it has turned out to be.
