Abstract
Abstract: The Recueil des Repues franches de maistre François Villon et de ses compagnons, of which Paul Verhuyck and Jelle Koopmans have recently published the first critical edition (Genève: Droz, 1995) was probably written about 1480. It contains a number of funny ways to get a free meal. The text is not simply a narrative, but combines in its presentation sequels of orality with the fiction of a book to be read, which is shown to sell to the public. Up till now, this publicity strategy has never been studied. The present article, meant to be a modest contribution to the history of reading, situates the text halfway between the readable narrative and a mode of performance that is nearly dramatic. Moreover it shows that the author of the Receuil must have been Chascun Poicdenare, a carnavalesque name, behind which is hidden a post- or para-villonian character, bookseller, actor and author.
