<p>Présentation de R
oger
L
ittle
. (Autrement mêmes). Paris, L'Harmattan, 2003. xviii+94 pp. Pb €10.00.</p>
<p>A ‘curiosité littéraire’, the
Histoire de Moulay Abelmeula
is an anonymous novella, whose first and only publication was within the first volume of François Antoine de Chevrier's
Amusemens des dames
in 1740. Reissued in Roger Little's collection ‘Autrement mêmes’, whose aim, according to the inside front cover of the edition, is to re-publish little-known works ‘qui traitent […] des Noirs, ou, plus généralement, de l'Autre’, according to their intrinsic literary, sociological, psychological or historical interest, this work is a welcome addition to a collection which has already issued a range of interesting texts, some of which would otherwise be impossible to locate for a non-research readership. The principal interest of what might otherwise be seen as a rather mediocre example of narrative fiction is its inclusion of the first ever main character who is black in the history of French narrative (p. x), and its inclusion of suggestive parallels with real-life characters and events from the French context contemporaneous with the novella's publication. This leads to useful material, in the Introduction, on the links between this work and the
Histoire anonyme de Louis Anniaba
, also anonymously published in 1740, and reissued by Roger Little in 2000. The Introduction speculates on the literary primacy of these two works, asking which borrows from the other, and whilst the back cover gets a little carried away in describing this ‘mystery’ as ‘curieusement postmoderne’, it is a shame that the two texts are not published in one single volume, where a synthetic introduction could do justice to the question. A review of a new edition aimed at a non-research market will perhaps inevitably ask awkward questions. I have three such quibbles: the range of generic descriptors applied to the work: from ‘roman’ (p. vii), to ‘roman d'aventures’ (p. viii), to ‘conte moral’ (p. xiv), none of which is defined, despite the obvious difficulties in doing so. Nor is the description of
Moulay Abelmeula
as ‘littérature populaire’ ultimately convincing: published only once, and in an edition for female readers, neither the sociological nor the quantitative senses of ‘populaire’ seems appropriate. And finally, whilst the vague reference in the note to page vii to a ‘traduction suédoise’ is tantalizing, it comes as something of a surprise not even to be presented with translated title or publication details.</p>
