The temptation to do this has been great, both because of the technical limitations of most historians, and because of the nature of music itself. The abstract symbolic content of music does 103455 not easily appear to contain references to political, social and philosophical events and ideas. In a language of its own, music seems to speak only of itself. But this is hardly ever the case, and Robert Isherwood has shown us how this was not the case in seventeenth-century France. Isherwood creates a panoramic view in which the philosophy of music is interrelated with the evolving politics of musical production. This includes poetry, drama, ballet, spectacle and pageant, and opera, the most synthetic of all the arts. These things, and stylistic developments in French music are all explored further by Isherwood in his principal point- that music was used as an important instrument of state policy by the French monarchy. In various ways, both Valois and Bourbon monarchs tended to use musical works as a means of revitalizing classical antiquity, bringing forth all the revered values of the ancient past within their own times. In this way they elevated their own lives, personalities, politics and culture. They combined a humanist absorption with the ancient world with their own continuation of the Renaissance ideal of human progress; so that, eventually, kings could visibly act the parts of great gods or heroes, and their courtiers could play at transformations, becoming nymphs, satyrs, dryads and minor divinities. The old tale of Vives, in which Jupiter served ambrosia and nectar to man, was being so far extended that Louis XIV, the Sun King, could actually become the Jupiter or the Apollo conferring his divine gifts upon men. By means of musical productions, the military victories, the patronage and the honours granted by the French monarch could be united metaphorically in an image of superhuman abundance. In an extended and believable parable the royal giver ws elevated, as were the recipients of his bounty. And thus, in the statecraft of the Valois, and later in that of Richelieu, Mazarin, Colbert and, especially, of Louis XIV, musical activities were used to convey gradiose images that impressed both the nation and foreign dignitaries with the unparalleled excellence, the brilliance and the virtuous power of the French monarchy. How could music, which is part of what some historians call diversion, how could abstract music have been selected to accomplish all this? In early modem Europe music had great theoretical and practical strength. Its first strength lay in the support of both ancient and Renaissance philosophy, and its second in the actual psychological effectiveness of music and ballet and of music drama. A great host of theoreticians, philosophers, poets and composers, containing names like Ronsard, Mersenne, Lully and Charpentier, all contributed to the promotion of these philosophical and psychological powers of music. But nothing could have been accomplished if the rulers themselves and if the people of taste had not also been convinced. Here their vicarious experiences, watching the performances, and their frequent participation in them often blended with their wider public roles. The credulity of it all went so far that careers could be broken if the wrong sorts of things were represented. For example, Lully's librettist, Quinault, was dismissed from court because Louis XIV's mistress, Madame de Montespan, disliked the allusion to her as a jealous Juno in the opera Isis In the work the court saw Montespan's temporary rival, Madame de Ludres, being represented in the more sympathetic role of Isis. And this is one of the ways that the French aristocrats played themselves and talked about themselves in musical productions. Naturally, we should not be surprised to see that, when all were exalted through music, some would inevitably have to fall far, by the same means. This is an original book, and it should not be missed by anyone interested in 104456 either French culture or politics in the seventeenth century.</meta-value>
