<meta-value> The changing scene Boston University has added several new faculty members. Composer and conductor Jan Johnson Swafford has been named assistant professor in theory. John Milton Peel, an author and composer, has also been appointed as assistant professor in theory. Conductor Thomas Dunn, a former editor-in-chief of the E. C. Schirmer Music Company, is now associate professor and director of choral organizations. Walter Rodby, president of the Illinois Music Educators Association, has been appointed community professor and director of choral activities at the College of St. Francis, Joliet, Illinois. A former music teacher at Joliet Township High School, Rodby also taught at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Illinois, where he served as director of vocal music for eighteen years and department chairman for nine years. Mount Royal College, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, has announced several appointments to its conservatory of music. Norman E. Burgess, associate director of the conservatory, has been promoted to director. The new associate director, Phillip Johnson, was formerly supervisor of music for the Moose Jaw Board of Education, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. Tuba specialist Paul Hoelzley, previously assistant professor at Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio, and violin specialist Zoltan Szabo, a former faculty member at Indiana State University, Terre Haute, have also joined the Mount Royal faculty. Other additions to the staff include Kenneth Bur-ward-Hoy, violin; Virginia Burward-Hoy, cello; Jean Landa, oboe; Tom Miller, percussion; Richard Mingus, horn; and Haig Robinson, piano. UT at San Antonio. Three new faculty appointments have been announced in the division of music at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Charles Berginc has become a lecturer of trumpet. James Chudnow serves as lecturer of contrabass. Douglas Lyren is now assistant professor of choral music. California State University, Fullerton, has appointed Benton Minor, professor of music and conductor of the university wind ensemble, to a three-year term as chairman of the music department. Other appointments to the university faculty include Bruno Amato, associate professor of music in composition and music theory; Keith Clark, associate professor of music and conductor of the university's symphony orchestra; Michael Kurkjian, lecturer in music and director of opera theatre; Gordon Paine, assistant professor of music, conductor of the Chamber Singers, and teacher in the area of choral literature and conducting; and Laurance Timm, assistant professor of music, applied oboe, and woodwind chamber music and conductor of the university's concert band. Kathleen Harris, now assistant professor of voice, formerly taught at the University of Oklahoma, Norman. Instructor of trumpet Barbara Sauer taught previously at Lincoln University, Lincoln University, Pennsylvania. Gilbert Keathley, instructor of low brass, is replacing William Runyan, who is on leave for the current academic year. Jack Gallagher has joined the faculty of The College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, as an instructor of music. A composer and trumpet player, Gallagher previously taught in the Beth-page (Long Island) Public Schools and served as a teaching assistant in music theory and music appreciation at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Daniel V. Robinson has joined the Wooster faculty as a visiting assistant professor of music. BCD OuDCBnuDcDlTaCnQ Thomas Schippers, an eminent American opera and orchestra conductor, died December 16, 1977, at the age of forty-seven in New York City. Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Schippers studied piano at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. In 1948, at the age of eighteen, he was invited by Eugene Ormandy to conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra, and he became conductor of the Lemonade Opera Company in New York in the same year. He was later named opera conductor of the New York City Opera Company and made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955. Schippers cofounded the Spoleto Festival in Italy with Gian Carlo Menotti in 1958 and acted as music director for the event for many years. Orchestral conducting engagements took him all over the United States and to Europe and Israel. He was also a principal opera conductor for La Scala and a guest conductor at Covent Garden, the Rome Opera, and the Wagner shrine in Bayreuth, Germany. In 1970, Schippers accepted the position of music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, from which he resigned shortly before his death. James Easton Patterson died October 18, 1977, at the age of twenty-seven. Patterson was a director of choral music at Lakewood High School, Jefferson County, Colorado. </meta-value>
