<meta-value> Band: Grades 7-12 Three Songs of Colonial America (includes “Yankee Doodle,” “Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier,” and “Chester”), Leroy Jackson, Grades 1-2, Warner. This collection belongs in the repertoire of all young bands. The only “school music” on this list, this little masterpiece provides a rewarding expressive experience for even the youngest, least “well-balanced” group and paves the way for the enjoyment of the more sophisticated band literature yet to come. “Komm, Susser Tod,” Johann Sebastian Bach, arr. Leidzen, Grades 2-3, Carl FischerU1635.This classic octavo edition should not be confused with more recent arrangements. Although technically undemanding, the work requires sensitivity and subtlety and can provide a powerful musical experience for students at all levels. “Flourish for Wind Band,” Ralph Vaughan Williams, Grade 3, Oxford. This selection is deceptively simple. Although rhythmic and technical demands are minimal, students will learn a great deal about the nuances of fine playing and control of dynamic levels from this bright, well-scored gem. “Ye Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doon,” Percy Grainger, Grades 3-4, Schirmer. This is undoubtedly the most beautiful setting ever of the familiar and lovely folk tune. 46 Grainger's scoring is exquisite. Fanfare for the Common Man, Aaron Copland, Grade 4, Boosey and Hawkes. This is a familiar and exciting little composition in its original scoring. High school brass players and percussionists derive great satisfaction from knowing they are playing the real thing, not a “simplified,” watered-down arrangement. “Chorale Fantasia” (1986), Jerry L. Bowder, Grade 4, unpublished. Based on the chorale tune “Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland,” this exciting and powerful composition uses a mixture of traditional and newer notational devices and playing techniques but is technically within the grasp of most bands. It was written for the Gorham, Maine, High School Band. Concerto for Trumpet, Franz Joseph Haydn, arr. Duthoit, Grade 4, Chappell Army Journal #73. This work includes a challenging solo part. The band parts are technically easy yet require students to expand their musical awareness to produce a true Classical style of accompaniment. “Morning, Noon & Night in Vienna,” Franz von Suppe, arr. Fillmore, Grades 4-5, Carl Fischer. Although it's not a great masterpiece, IVe included this war-horse, barn burner of an overture because every student needs the thrill of discovering the nineteenth-century band-in-the-park heritage, which is somewhat unfashionable these days. “Variations on ‘America,” Charles Ives, arr. Schuman and Rhoads, Grades 4-5, Presser. This gem of Americana can serve as a pivotal composition and open doors in all directions—to the study of music history, composition techniques, and orchestration. The vari- ation structure is crystal clear, the form is exquisite, and the scoring is ingenious. Suites for Military Band, Gustav Hoist, Grades 4-5, Boosey and Hawkes. These two suites, in E-flat and F, are classics of the literature. Even if performance is not the goal, everyone will profit from exposure to both of these masterpieces as well as to the English Folksong Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Please note that many of these works are either out of print or not “school music.” This seems to be a commentary on (a) the quality of much recently published “band music” and (b) the low levels of expectation of far too many school band directors.—Libbie E. Perry-Bowder, music librarian. University of Southern Maine, Gorham </meta-value>
