<meta-value> Orchestra: Grades 6-8 “Tintinabulations,” J. S. Pierpont, arr. Katherine W. Punwar, Full Orchestra, Grade 3 (medium), Neil A. Kjos Music Co. Our solution to the annual “Christmas carol medley doldrums,” this composition is an arrangement of “Jingle Bells” in the styles of Gioacchino Rossini, Jo-hann Strauss, Jr., “jazz,” and a hoe-down. It is pure fun for the holidays. “Minor Variations,” Marsha Chus-mir Shapiro, String Orchestra, Grade 2 (easy), Highland/Etling Publishing. This is one of the few introspective selections that I have been able to “sell” to middle school students. Students enjoyed the theme and were pleased that everyone had the opportunity to play it. “Galactic Rounds,” Richard Fel-ciano, Full Orchestra, Grade 6 (difficult), E. C. Schirmer Music Co. This selection is notable for the use of modern notation and performance techniques. Students find it challenging to consider this new form of musical expression. “Danza,” Vaclav Nelhybel, String Orchestra, Grade 3 (medium), E. C. Kerby, Ltd. Only minimal technique is required to play individual parts, but considerable independence is needed to combine the parts. Students were motivated to acquire this independence because they liked the composition, particularly the muted Adagio and the double stops in the final Vivo section. “Seasons,” Francis L. Feese, Studio Orchestra (no clarinets), Grade 4 (medium), Young World Publica- tions. Originally scored for film, this work provided an opportunity to feature outstanding saxophone students and to allow string players to experience playing in a “jazz” or “swing” style. Six Pieces, J. B. Lully, arr. James Brown, String Orchestra, Grade 4 (medium difficult), Galaxy Music Corp. Study of these dances provides insight into the French Baroque style. Our favorites were “Sarabande” and “Cibel.” Suite for Strings, Elliot A. Del Borgo, String Orchestra, Grade 2 (medium easy), Kendor Music. The final movement, “Dance,” is characterized by a 3+3+2 rhythm pitted against symmetrical rhythms. The composer alternates marcato and cantabile melodies above or below these rhythms: The effect of this combination is striking. Middle school students were immediately drawn to the rhythmic “puzzle” in this selection. “Themes from Vivaldi's Gloria,11 Antonio Vivaldi, arr. Harry Alshin, String Orchestra, Grade 3 (medium), Kendor Music. Easily accessible to middle school students, this music is of such quality and is so expertly arranged that my middle school students thought they sounded like high school students. “Fanfare and Frippery,” Richard A. Stephan, String Orchestra, Grade 3 (medium), Lake State Publications. This work features changing meters and cross rhythms. Its aggressive style is appealing to students; it is an excellent festival selection. “Moods of Mahler's Symphony No. i,” Gustav Mahler, arr. Vernon Leidig, Full Orchestra, Grade 4 (medium), Highland/Etling Publishing. This is an unusually successful arrangement of a late Romantic work for school orchestra. The themes of the symphony's second, third, and fourth movements are presented in separate sections—the second “mood” (the minor variant of “Frere Jacques”) was a favorite of my students.—Denise Lutter, orchestra director, Bronxville Schools, Bronxville, New York </meta-value>
