Abstract

Copies of the first edition of the libretto of Lully's Thésée, printed by Christophe Ballard for the performances at Saint-Germain-en-Laye in January and February 1675, contain many variants: even though the same page may seem identical at a cursory glance, careful examination shows that they were printed from widely different fonts. The most obvious differences are in the various ornamental "Culs de lampe" at the end of the four first acts of the tragedy and in the different printers' flowers in the type ornaments separating the scenes. This examination sheds light on several practices in Ballard's print shop, in particular the fact that the formes used for certain pages were set aside for several weeks with a view to being reprinted. Based on the case of Thésée, this paper suggests a methodology for the classification of other librettos of operas premiered at the court of Louis XIV.

            <abstract xml:lang="fr">Les exemplaires de la première édition du livret de Thésée de Lully, imprimée par Christophe Ballard pour les représentations de Saint-Germain-en-Laye en janvier et février 1675, se distinguent les uns des autres par de nombreuses variantes : bien qu'une même page paraisse au premier coup d'œil identique d'un livret à l'autre, un examen minutieux révèle que des caractères d'imprimerie d'aspects très différents ont servi à leur réalisation. Les changements les plus visibles apparaissent dans l'emploi de différents culs de lampe situés à la fin des quatre premiers actes de la tragédie et dans la variété des motifs de fleurons qui forment les bandeaux qui séparent les scènes. Cette étude met en lumière certaines pratiques éditoriales ayant court dans l'atelier de Ballard, notamment la conservation des formes de certaines pages pendant plusieurs semaines en vue d'une réimpression ; à partir de l'exemple de Thésée, elle propose une méthodologie pour le classement d'autres livrets d'opéras créés à la cour de Louis XIV.</abstract>
