Abstract

The collection of music manuscripts known as Collection Philidor was carried out by François Fossard and André Danican Philidor, both musicians and gardiens of the music library of Louis XIV, and by their copying workshop, between 1670 and 1710. During the French Révolution, the collection was dispersed between the library of the Paris Conservatoire and the City Library of Versailles. At the Conservatoire, the core of the Philidor collection was inventoried around 1813 by the librarian Nicolas Roze, but he listed only court ballets, some comédies-ballets by Lully, several stage works, instrumental works performed at the court, collections of dances and airs, librettos of ballets and comédies-ballets. This set suffered losses between 1820 and 1830, especially under the management of Fétis, who was charged, perhaps wrongly, with having misappropiated some manuscripts. The collections of the former library of the Conservatoire are now housed in the Music Department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The 31 remaining volumes of the Collection Philidor / Roze are described here, as well as about thirty volumes that were not listed by Roze but are closely related to this collection. Some of the manuscripts collected and copied by Philidor and Fossard held in the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France are aiso listed here. The other part of the Philidor collection is still located in the City Library of Versailles.
