Forty maxillary central incisors were selected and instrumented to a number 50 file. The roots were fitted with an experimental 18-gauge hollow stainless steel post having six crimps. Gold cores were cast for each specimen. The 40 specimens were divided into two test groups of 20 teeth. The first group was tested for post and core retention. The second group was reinstrumented and then reobturated through the hollow post. Ten of this group were tested for retention failure. The remaining 10 specimens along with 10 specimens from the first group were centrifuged in black ink for 24 h to check the adequacy of obturation. There was no statistically significant difference between the retention failure loads, and, using a subjective evaluation, no significant difference was found in apical leakage.
