Abstract

A significant portion of the gold in the Porgera orebody is highly refractory, being intimately associated with pyrite in submicroscopic form. Acid pressure oxidation of the pyrite is used toliberate the gold and render it recoverable using conventional cyanidation techniques. This paper describes the start-up of the pressure oxidation circuit which is designed to treat up to 1200 t/d of low-grade pyrite concentrate. The circuit principally comprises three large autoclaves, wash thickeners and a neutralisation circuit.
