Abstract

The charter granted by Acfred, duke of the Aquitanians, to Sauxillanges (927), which is considered to be the founding act of the establishment (at that time held by canons), is probably genuine. However, it was certainly falsified no later than 942-950, at which date Étienne II, bishop of Clermont, the son of one of the executors named by Acfred, placed Sauxillanges under the authority of Cluny : on that occasion, the Burgundian abbey received the document itself or a copy, the tenor of which is preserved in one of its cartularies as well as in that of Sauxillanges. Therefore, the clause in the charter forbidding the canons from genuflecting or prostrating themselves before anyone else than Christ, remains of much interest for early mediaeval political culture.
