Abstract

Land use activities, particularly related to agriculture and forestry can have considerable impact on the biological health of soils. In the UK some soils are poor in soil organic matter and it has been suggested that these soils are vulnerable to inappropriate farming activities. Existing monitoring of soil biological health appears limited and poorly co-ordinated. To address this problem the agro-ecosystem is conceived as a three dimensional structure in which the distribution of carbon plays a central role. Issues associated with the construction of a monitoring framework to provide policy relevant information on soil biological health are discussed and examples of techniques which may usefully be incorporated in such a framework are presented. In conclusion an action plan for monitoring soil biological health is proposed which includes the integration of experimental, modelling and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques so that information can be provided at both a national and local scale.
