Abstract

The extensive loss of semi-natural habitat from agricultural landscapes has led to schemes for the re-creation of patches of deciduous trees and other landscape features. However, many initiatives have been episodic and are unlikely to create an overall landscape structure which is visually satisfying or ecologically cohesive. It is proposed that the emergent discipline of landscape ecology can provide a basis for the more coherent design of future habitat creation strategies. General principles are abstracted which provide a rationale for the production of a test plan for an area of marginal farmland in central Scotland. Particular attention is paid to the role of farm woodlands. A geographic information system model is proposed, and this facilitates the production of a hypothetical landscape plan and the derivation of test measures for plan evaluation.
