Abstract

In recent years the development policies of less developed countries have shown an increasing emphasis on the agricultural sector and rural development generally, with support for this emphasis coming from academic circles, aid agencies and international bodies, as well as the governments directly concerned. The question of how to accelerate expansion in the agricultural sector and how best to improve welfare for the mass of the people in the rural areas is now the focus of considerable attention. Kenya's Special Rural Development Programme (SRDP) is of particular interest in this regard because of the breadth of activities covered, the range of geographical areas encompassed, and the specifically experimental and innovatory nature of the programme. This paper reviews critically the progress of the SRDP.
