Abstract

California's agriculture is one of the most diversified in the world and is based on the irrigation of 9.9 million acres of land. Since 1975 the California Department of Water Resources has been cooperating with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the University of California in addressing the applicability of Landsat imagery and digital data to aid in the mapping and estimation of irrigated land and specific crop types. The three groups conducted an inventory of irrigated acreage over the entire state in 1979. The inventory system utilized stratified regression estimation based on multidate Landsat and single-date ground measurements of irrigated proportion. Development of a digital version of the irrigated-lands inventory system using a simple vegetation indicator, the ratio of Landsat MSS band 7 to MSS band 5, is nearing completion. The development of computer-assisted mapping and area-estimation systems for crop type is in progress.
