Abstract
A computer-based system is described to assess potential productivity of land for common agricultural crops. It is based mainly on whole farm crop data and some data from experimental plots. The modelling is designed to use available soil and climatic information as statistical averages and generalised crop phenology. The concepts of workability, machinery work days and crop water supply are considered vital parameters of most cropping systems. The possible uses of the system for land use policy, financial/economic and environmental purposes are outlined.
