Abstract

Summary: The contribution of economists to the analysis and evaluation of agricultural research in Canada during the past decade is examined in this paper. Of 9000 person-years devoted to agricultural research in the federal Department of Agriculture during the 1970s, some 60 person-years were allocated to bio-economic research. The products of their work have been: advice on the analysis of over 50 research projects; exposure of new technologies to extension specialists; input into the formulation of priorities for research and policy analysis of the effects of new technology on regional and national production. Recent reorganisations in the Department have reduced the level of economics input to agricultural research projects.
