Launched on 21 November 2002, each issue will revolve around a different development topic that affects young people around the world. The webzine's inaugural edition, which coincided with World AIDS Day on 1 December, focuses on HIV/AIDS issues as they relate to youth. The central feature of the site is a monthly article on a topic that affects children around the world. The story is complemented by pictures which help illustrate the issue. The site links to appropriate interactive activities and the Bank's radio and video information products. There is also a dialogue button, giving children an opportunity to voice their opinion and ask for more information. In addition to these news and games features, the site includes such learning components as a glossary of terms and links to other relevant sites. Kids DevNews website: http:// www.worldbank.org/kidsdevnews. Further information from: World Bank, 1818 H Street NW, Washington DC 20433, USA. Tel. 1202477 1234. URL: http://www.worldbank.org. NEW FROM UNESCO NEW WEBWORLD A new version of WebWorld, the website of UNESCO's Communication and Information Sector and a new WebWorld News Digest, a quarterly print version of WebWorld news items, was launched in October 2002 on the occasion of the 165th session of UNESCO's Executive Board. The new WebWorld is easier to use and is entirely bilingual English and French. It aims to provide new services in the future, including on-line training facilities in the area of communication and informa- tion. The WebWorld News Digest will provide a quarterly print selection of news highlights from the website. The launching of the new version of Web- World is one of the first steps in an overall reform of UNESCO's web system, to become a knowledge portal in the areas of education, sciences, culture, communication and information. New WebWorld URL: http://portal.unesco.org/ci/ev.php? NEW FROM FAO AGROVOC THESAURUS IN ARABIC AND CHINESE From 5 December 2002, the FAO's agricultural thesaurus, Agrovoc, is now online in Arabic and Chinese in addition to the existing English, French, Portuguese and Spanish versions. Agrovoc is used throughout FAO's web pages to help locate subject- specific information and is particularly relevant to indexers, librarians and translators working in the global food and agriculture sector. Agrovoc has been adopted as a standard by documentation centres around the world and versions in Czech, German, Italian and Polish have been created by research institutions and universities in several countries. For further information: Johannes.keizer@fao.org. URL: http://www.fao.org/agrovoc/. FAO AND WHO LAUNCH CODEX ALIMENTARIUS WEBSITE The Codex Alimentarius Commission was created in 1963 by FAO and WHO to develop food standards, guidelines and related texts such as codes of practice under the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Pro- gramme. The main purposes of this Programme are protecting the health of consumers, ensuring fair trade practices in the food trade and promoting coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations. The website has been re-vamped and was launched in August 2002 at: http://www.codexalimentarius.net. Further information from: FAO, Vialle delle Terme de Caracalla, 00100 Rome, Italy. Tel. 396570 53259. Fax: 39653699/55924. URL: http:// www.fao.org/waicent/faoinfo/. Information Development, vol. 19, no. 1, March 2003 57 NEW FROM CABI NEW CABRef SERVICE Since May 2002, CABI Publishing aims to add value to its databases of through a new linkage system called CABRef. It is a free way for publishers to add value to their full-text content, by supplementing their reference lists with links to comprehensive, informative abstracts taken from the CABI Publish- ing databases. For end-users, there are significant benefits because CABRef offers easy linkage from references in online journals to the corresponding abstract and then onto the full-text, if available, either online or via a paper-based document delivery service. Readers are able to follow similar links to expand their research and to identify further documents of relevance. URL: http://www.cabref.org. Further information from: CABI International, Wallingford, Oxon OX10 8DE, UK. Tel. 44 1491 832 111. Fax: 44 1491 833 508. URL: http:// www.cabi.org. E-mail: cabi@cabi.org. NEW FROM KIT NEW WEB RESOURCE ON ICT AND DEVELOPMENT On 3 December 2002, KIT Information Services launched a new 'Special' or web resource 'ICTs and Development'. This web resource will consider the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in development cooperation. For this web resource, 'international cooperation' will refer to donor policies and approaches, while 'ICTs' will be taken to refer primarily to the Internet, so that other important ICTs, such as radio and telephones, will not receive specific attention. The web resource is trying to assess the evidence gathered to conclude whether the ICTs for development campaign is a fad or a fashion. This web resource will first assess key issues and donors' commitment to ICTs, particularly whether they view ICTs as a 'priority area' or as a set of tools. Secondly, it will consider ICTs' contribution to meeting international development goals. Thirdly, it will briefly discuss what conditions need to exist in the national environment if ICTs are to be an effectivetool and whether ICTs are supply-driven by donors. Fourthly, it will briefly present examples of the emerging knowledge sharing philosophy to empha- size the qualitative impact of ICTs on development. In particular, the case of women and the Internet will be considered. The final three pages on ICTs and development provide resources. These include an e-bibliography, a list of publications from the KIT Library collection and a further section, a new feature on ICT News that will be regularly updated. URL: http://www.kit.nl/ specials/html/it_icts_and_development.asp. Further information from: Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), PO Box 95001, 1090 HA Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Tel. 31 20 568 8711. Fax: 31 20 668 4579. URL: http://www.kit.nl. E-mail: communica- tion@kit.nl. NEW PRESERVATION GATEWAY The National Archives of the Netherlands and the European Commission on Preservation and Access (ECPA), a partner in UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme, recently launched the Gateway for Resources and Information on Preservation (GRIP), an Internet portal giving access to core material on the various aspects of document pre- servation. The resources included in GRIP aim to be of interest to a wide audience, including preservation professionals, collection managers, policy makers, librarians, archivists, museum curators, audiovisual specialists and information technologists. The GRIP database contains more than 2200 references to literature, organizations, projects, training activities and discussion lists. It can be searched by category, keywords (descriptors), keyword combinations and free search. All references are connected to a thesaurus, so that users can browse through GRIP by using related, narrow or broader terms. The GRIP portal may be accessed at: http://www.knaw.nl/ecpa/ grip/.
