<p>The establishment of a standard for electronic patient record communication has been an iterative process involving the integration of information from a variety of sources representing multiple interests in the health care process. We discuss the development of MEDIX, an evolving IEEE standard for medical data interchange, as it evolved from the earliest concerns for the communication of patient data to what is the current scope of medical knowledge representation and communication in the context of the implementation of a prototype distributed multimedia patient record.</p>
