We discuss the development of MEDIX, an evolving IEEE standard for medical data interchange, as it evolved from the earliest concerns for the communication of patient data to what is the current scope of medical knowledge representation and communication in the context of the implementation of a prototype distributed multimedia patient record.</p></div></front></TEI><pmc article-type="brief-report"><pmc-comment>The publisher of this article does not allow downloading of the full text in XML form.</pmc-comment>
