Abstract

While the multimedia communication progresses, the postal service still plays an important role as a basic communication means. Globally, the volume of mail tends to increase toward the 21st century, while decrease of young labor force and increase of the mail processing cost have become problems. In such circumstances, various countries in the world have been working on postal automation as an important theme. Especially, automation of mail processing with OCR technology is an important theme. This paper describes the current of postal automation and the tendency in future in respect of both products and technologies.
