Abstract
Aurea was chosen by St Eligius († 660) to be abbess of a monastery at Paris. A Vita, found with two different beginnings, two homilies and a verse office were compiled for her feast, which was formerly celebrated on 4 October. These works, which were omitted from the Acta Sanctorum, are published here for the first time. On the basis of some passages in the Vita of Eligius an author writing between 900 and 1050 transformed Aurea who had played a secondary role in that Vita into the protagonist. However, because of historical circumstances the saint’s cult waned as from the 12th century, which led to the progressive decline of the legend. In an appendix some sixty breviaries, both manuscript and printed, are classified according to the structure of the readings devoted to Aurea.
