Abstract

In the European Middle Ages, the area in which the majority of lay Christians came into contact with the so‐called institutional Church was pastoral care. Three principle areas of this care were preaching, confession, and catechesis. All three provide a window into popular religious practice, and thus, the study of pastoral care benefitted from the social‐historical turn of the 1960s and 1970s and an increased emphasis on “the people.” One of the key aspects of this study of pastoral care has been in investigation of pastoralia, those works of literature meant to help clergy with the cure of souls carry out their tasks. The study of pastoralia begins with the manuscripts, but then aids several different approaches: history of sexuality, feminism, social and cultural history, and history of universities all make abundant use of pastoral literature.

<desc> Andrew Reeves's primary scholarly concern is the dissemination of school‐based theology in the later Middle Ages. He studies both the development of ideas and how these ideas promulgated, and in particular, how model sermon collections and other pastoral literature helped clergy articulate Christian morals and dogma to their lay flocks. His dissertation, “Teaching the Creed and Articles of Faith in England: Lateran IV to
<hi rend="italic">Ignorantia sacerdotum</hi>
,” concerned religious life and lay catechesis in 13th‐century England. Other aspects of his research concern how England's Augustinian canons took part in the practice of pastoral care in the 13th century. He has recently written on how Dominicans in late medieval England may have shared model sermon collections with parish priests; this investigation was an outgrowth of his research on the circulation of ideas. He holds a BA in History and English from the University of Texas at Austin and a PhD from the University of Toronto's Center for Medieval Studies. He currently serves as a history lecturer for Troy University's Augusta site.</desc>

<p>Andrew Reeves's primary scholarly concern is the dissemination of school‐based theology in the later Middle Ages. He studies both the development of ideas and how these ideas promulgated, and in particular, how model sermon collections and other pastoral literature helped clergy articulate Christian morals and dogma to their lay flocks. His dissertation, “Teaching the Creed and Articles of Faith in England: Lateran IV to
<i>Ignorantia sacerdotum</i>
,” concerned religious life and lay catechesis in 13th‐century England. He currently serves as a history lecturer for Troy University's Augusta site.</p>

<p>In the European Middle Ages, the area in which the majority of lay Christians came into contact with the so‐called institutional Church was pastoral care. Three principle areas of this care were preaching, confession, and catechesis. All three provide a window into popular religious practice, and thus, the study of pastoral care benefitted from the social‐historical turn of the 1960s and 1970s and an increased emphasis on “the people.” One of the key aspects of this study of pastoral care has been in investigation of
<i>pastoralia</i>
, those works of literature meant to help clergy with the cure of souls carry out their tasks. The study of
<i>pastoralia</i>
begins with the manuscripts, but then aids several different approaches: history of sexuality, feminism, social and cultural history, and history of universities all make abundant use of pastoral literature.</p>
