Abstract

Polyphony at two, three and four voices was sung at the new church of Paris at the end of the XIIth century. The great organa were composed by a choice-part of clerics to celebrate the major feasts of the cathedral Notre-Dame. This study shows how the cantors were able to create by memory such noble compositions (tripla and quadrupla). It explains a musical practice in his cultural context and the main things of mnemotechnics and Latin's learning in medieval education.
