Abstract

At about 150 km NE of Tadoussac, Cap Colombier is presently the most northeastern site known along the north shore of the lower St. Lawrence estuary where dolostone erratics occur in a significant amount. Over 50 dolostone erratics of various types have been observed in the intertidal clayey zone of Havre du Colombier. The size of clasts ranges from 7 to 320 cm. Although one mega-boulder weighs about 20 metric tons, the remaining erratics are much smaller, the ten largest weighing between 33 and 345 kg. About 12% of the clasts were crystalline pink dolostone and 20% were striated. One brecchiated boulder contained stromatolitic structures. The most likely source is the Mistassini sedimentary basin located about 500 km to the NW. This suggests first a glacial transport by a major ice flow from an ice divide located NW of Lake Mistassini, and second, a release in the Goldthwait Sea by icebergs possibly calved from the glacier tongue located in the Saguenay fjord.
