Abstract
This article considers the technical and economic factors which both invite and constrain the importation of steam coal for the generation of electricity in the 1990s. It reviews and criticizes the prognosis contained in the Central Electricity Generating Board's influential 1986 Memorandum of Evidence to the House of Commons Energy Select Committee and suggests that constraints are more significant than is generally recognized.
