Abstract
There is a need for effective ways of separating usable materials from post-consumer waste. One possible way is to collect the waste in its normal condition (i.e. as mixed waste) and then to separate the usable materials from each other, and from the rest of the waste, in suitable plants. This method is relatively unproven and could be difficult to operate efficiently in practice. On the basis of a survey of current views and published results it is suggested that another method, i.e. separation at source by the producer of the waste before the materials have become mixed, has not been sufficiently considered. More experimental work is needed on the merits of these alternative systems before conclusions can be drawn and policies formulated. The architectural implications of ‘source separation’ are discussed and a kitchen unit, to store four streams of separated domestic refuse, is proposed.
