Abstract

Surface waves circumnavigating an empty cylindrical cavity in an elastic polymeric solid are analysed. Four wave families are found. The first two are close to shear or longitudinal Franz waves. The corresponding resonances obtained from an asymptotic approximation of the characteristic equation (obtained by the use of Airy's expansion for the Hankel functions) are compared to the exact solutions. The agreement is good. The two others are close to the Rayleigh waves because they can be related at high frequency to Rayleigh waves at a plane vacuum/solid interface. One wave is analogous to the “classical” Rayleigh wave (constant velocity and no damping along the plane vacuum/solid interface). The last wave is analogous to a Rayleigh wave related to a complex root of the characteristic equation.
