Abstract
Abstract: We review recent experimental and theoretical findings on the behavior of surface tension dominated thermal convection in a thin fluid layer for Marangoni numbers significantly exceeding the threshold of the primary instability. Particular emphasis is placed on the description of a secondary instability which leads to a transformation of hexagonal convective cells into squares, referred to as the hexagon-square transition. Moreover, we explain the role of defects in the transition process and discuss some theoretical work aiming at the prediction of scaling laws for heat transport in the turbulent regime for low-Prandtl number fluids.
