Abstract
Trends toward novel ways for sociability and shared experiences on the Internet are in strong contrast with perceived individualization in a city context. Although the first applications in this space are emerging, a need exists to offer the same degree of support for social networking, usergenerated content, and a rich means of communication between people in a city context. In this paper, we report on user research in the home and city context and on the technical innovations supporting people and communities in creating, experiencing, and sharing cross‐media community city experiences. We will discuss the following research topics: the city vision and contextual investigation, creating a common identity by creating new nodal points by using and extending the concept of “interaction zones,” reestablishing the home's role as nodality, and the tools that are required to support users in this respect. © 2008 Alcatel‐Lucent.
