Abstract

The research project Geomedia (ANR Corpus, 2013-2015) proposes to collect and to analyse a sample of about hundred international RSS feeds produced by newspapers in English and French languages. The central hypothesis of this project is the fact that media are not producing identical visions of the World and more precisely of international relations between states. Similarities or differences between media can be revealed by (1) the comparison of the importance allotted to the same international events, (2) the comparison of time variations in the reporting of events, (3) the comparison of spatial variations in the distribution of countries mentioned and associated in the same news. The central difficulty of the project is to propose objective quantitative measures making it possible to benchmark the focus of media on the different countries of the World. This paper tries to identify conceptual and methodological difficulties through the examination of RSS feeds sent by 4 newspapers over a 18 months period.

<front><div type="abstract" xml:lang="en">The research project Geomedia (ANR Corpus, 2013-2015) proposes to collect and to analyse a sample of about hundred international RSS feeds produced by newspapers in English and French languages. The central hypothesis of this project is the fact that media are not producing identical visions of the World and more precisely of international relations between states. Similarities or differences between media can be revealed by (1) the comparison of the importance allotted to the same international events, (2) the comparison of time variations in the reporting of events, (3) the comparison of spatial variations in the distribution of countries mentioned and associated in the same news. The central difficulty of the project is to propose objective quantitative measures making it possible to benchmark the focus of media on the different countries of the World. This paper tries to identify conceptual and methodological difficulties through the examination of RSS feeds sent by 4 newspapers over a 18 months period.</div>

            <abstract xml:lang="fr">L’ANR Corpus Geomedia (2013-2015) se propose de collecter et d’analyser un échantillon d’une centaine de flux RSS « internationaux » émis par des journaux quotidiens de langues française et anglaise. L’hypothèse centrale de ce travail est le fait que les médias produisent des visions différentes du Monde et, plus précisément, des relations internationales. Les ressemblances et différences entre médias peuvent être mises en évidence par (1) la comparaison de l’importance qu’ils accordent à un même événement, (2) la comparaison des variations temporelles de l’importance relative accordée à tel ou tel pays et (3) la comparaison des variations spatiales dans la distribution des pays cités ou co-cités. La difficulté centrale du projet est de proposer des mesures quantitatives objectives permettant de comparer les focalisations respectives des médias sur les différents pays du Monde. Cette présentation essaye d’identifier les difficultés conceptuelles et méthodologiques à travers l’analyse des flux RSS internationaux de 4 journaux sur une période de 18 mois.</abstract>
