Abstract

Abbé Ja cques-François Dicquemare (1733-1789) is a French clergyman of the end of the eighteenth century. As a naturalist he was on home ground. He lived in Le Havre and he explored the French coasts of the Channel in order to describe and classify marine animals. In Le Havre he studied and experimented in Astronomy, Geography and Zoology. Here we will be especially interested in this last field. Observations and experimentations of Abbé Dicquemare make us think to all the works carried through during the eighteenth century, particularly to the discovery of hydras by Tremblay in the year 1744. Dicquemare would only be extending the properties of mobility, regeneration and potentiality of the hydras' tissues to the sea anemones. However during the eighteenth century his works take on a true originality because of the used methods and got results in his researches in Normandy. He is considered as a pioneer in the studies on sea anemones.

<abstract xml:lang="fr">L'abbé Jacques-François Dicquemare (1733-1789) est un ecclésiastique de la fin du XVIIIème siècle qui fut un naturaliste de terrain, résidant au Havre et explorant les côtes du pays de Caux pour décrire et classer les animaux marins. Au Havre, il étudia et expérimenta en astronomie, en géographie et en zoologie marine. C'est surtout ce dernier domaine qui nous intéressera ici. Les observations et expérimentations de Dicquemare font penser à tous les travaux menés au XVIIIe siècle depuis la découverte des hydres de Tremblay et de leurs propriétés. Dicquemare ne ferait qu'étendre aux anémones de mer les propriétés de mobilité, de régénération et de potentialité des tissus que l'on avait découverte depuis 1744 sur les hydres. Cependant, ses travaux revêtent une certaine originalité du fait des méthodes employées et résultats obtenus dans l'investigation des côtes de la Manche et de l'estuaire de la Seine au XVIIIe siècle, et dans le rôle de pionnier qu'il eût dans la description des anémones de mer.</abstract>
