<note type="content">Fig. 1: Two possible phylogenies of gene families with four members (A–D) in vertebrates. (a) The symmetrical (AB)(CD) topology predicted by the 2R hypothesis (see text). T1 is the time of the first genome duplication event and T2 is the time of the second genome duplication. (b) Short internal branches and/or evolutionary rate variation among paralogues can lead to the erroneous reconstruction of an asymmetrical A(B(CD)) tree.</note>
<note type="content">Fig. 2: An 11.5-day-old embryonic transgenic mouse carrying a small heat shock protein/alphaB-crystallin enhancer driving the lacZ reporter gene (adapted, with permission, from Ref. 13). An ancestral small heat shock protein/alpha-crystallin duplicated at least 500 million years ago producing alphaA-crystallin and alphaB-crystallin. The figure shows that the alphaB-crystallin promoter is active in many developing tissues including the somites, heart and eye. In adults, alphaB-crystallin is expressed constitutively, especially in the lens, heart and skeletal muscles, and is stress inducible. By contrast, alphaA-crystallin is almost lens-specific and is not stress inducible. In Aussois, Joram Piatigorsky (NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA) reported that for these, and other porteins 14, the evolution of novel gene functions (e.g. lens proteins) precedes gene duplication. Selection could favour the retention of duplicates if one copy specilizes on a subset of the ancestral roles as appears to have occurred with alphaA-crystallin in mouse.</note>
