Abstract

En vue d’évaluer l’apport d’un agent conversationnel animé (ACA) à l’efficacité et la facilité d’utilisation des aides en ligne destinées au grand public, vingt-deux étudiants ont conçu deux animations avec le logiciel Flash en étant assistés successivement par deux systèmes d’aide en ligne multimodaux. Les deux systèmes utilisaient des messages oraux et graphiques ; l’unique différence entre les systèmes était la présence ou non d’un ACA représenté par une tête parlante. Les jugements subjectifs exprimés dans les questionnaires indiquent que la présence de l’ACA ainsi que son influence ont été bénéfiques. L’analyse des données oculométriques montre que l’ACA a attiré l’attention visuelle des participants et suscité leur intérêt. Cependant les résultats du post-test et l’analyse des interactions suggèrent que sa présence n ’a pas eu d’effet sensible sur l’apprentissage du logiciel ni sur l’efficacité de la réalisation des animations. Elle a seulement favorisé la consultation de l’aide.

An empirical study is presented which aims at assessing the possible effects of embodiment on online help effectiveness and attraction. 22 undergraduate students designed two simple animations with Flash, using two different multimodal online help agents EH and UH, one per animation. Both help agents used the same database of speech and graphics messages EH was personified using a talking head while UH was not embodied. Subjective judgments elicited through questionnaires indicate that the presence of the ECA and its influence on help effectiveness were perceived as positive. Analysis of eye tracking data indicates that the ECA actually attracted their visual attention and interest, since they glanced at it from the beginning to the end of the animation creation. Contrastingly, posttests marks and conclusions of interaction trace analysis suggest that the ECA’s presence had no perceivable effect on concept or skill learning or task execution efficiency.

<front><div type="abstract" xml:lang="fr">En vue d’évaluer l’apport d’un agent conversationnel animé (ACA) à l’efficacité et la facilité d’utilisation des aides en ligne destinées au grand public, vingt-deux étudiants ont conçu deux animations avec le logiciel Flash en étant assistés successivement par deux systèmes d’aide en ligne multimodaux. Les deux systèmes utilisaient des messages oraux et graphiques ; l’unique différence entre les systèmes était la présence ou non d’un ACA représenté par une tête parlante. Les jugements subjectifs exprimés dans les questionnaires indiquent que la présence de l’ACA ainsi que son influence ont été bénéfiques. L’analyse des données oculométriques montre que l’ACA a attiré l’attention visuelle des participants et suscité leur intérêt. Cependant les résultats du post-test et l’analyse des interactions suggèrent que sa présence n ’a pas eu d’effet sensible sur l’apprentissage du logiciel ni sur l’efficacité de la réalisation des animations. Elle a seulement favorisé la consultation de l’aide.</div>
<div type="abstract" xml:lang="en">An empirical study is presented which aims at assessing the possible effects of embodiment on online help effectiveness and attraction. 22 undergraduate students designed two simple animations with Flash, using two different multimodal online help agents EH and UH, one per animation. Both help agents used the same database of speech and graphics messages EH was personified using a talking head while UH was not embodied. Subjective judgments elicited through questionnaires indicate that the presence of the ECA and its influence on help effectiveness were perceived as positive. Analysis of eye tracking data indicates that the ECA actually attracted their visual attention and interest, since they glanced at it from the beginning to the end of the animation creation. Contrastingly, posttests marks and conclusions of interaction trace analysis suggest that the ECA’s presence had no perceivable effect on concept or skill learning or task execution efficiency.</div>
