Abstract

Abstract: In order to handle its own documentation as well as in order to come to the aid of isolated researchers who have no access to computers, the Institute of Research and of the History of Texts is attempting to put together a certain number of programs which can satisfy the needs of various types of medieval historical documents. 1. The first of these systems involves text treatment; the documentary output is in the form of word indexes and concordances. We have also insisted, taking into consideration the age of these documents, on making provision for an index of persons and places. 2. The second system concerns the treatment of repetitive documentation. It consists in dividing the information into zones and then effecting a certain number of sorting operations both major and minor. 3. The third, much more complex, is an analysis of content involving the following operations: indexing the document by means of descriptive terms contained in an original lexicon of a hierarchical sort; establishing relations between these descriptive terms; input to the machine of the structure of the document (where, by whom, to whom, etc.) in order to facilitate the eventual questioning of the researcher. In order to help other researchers, the Institute of Texts has created a Centre of Information for the treatment of medieval historical documents with the task of compiling information on all actual work undertaken in this field in France or elsewhere.
