Abstract

Abstract: Localization is a fundamental task in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), where data is tightly coupled with the environment and the location where it is generated. The research literature on localization has reached a critical mass, and several surveys have also emerged. This review paper contributes on the state-of-the-art with the proposal of a new and holistic taxonomy of the fundamental concepts of localization in CPS, based on a comprehensive analysis of previous research works and surveys. The main objective is to pave the way towards a deep understanding of the main localization techniques, and unify their descriptions. Furthermore, this review paper provides a complete overview on the most relevant localization and geolocation techniques. Also, we present the most important metrics for measuring the accuracy of localization approaches, which is meant to be the gap between the real location and its estimate. Finally, we present open issues and research challenges pertaining to localization. We believe that this review paper will represent an important and complete reference of localization techniques in CPS for researchers and practitioners and will provide them with an added value as compared to previous surveys.

<note type="biography">Anis Koubâa is an Associate Professor and Networking Consultant at Al-Imam Mohamed bin Saudi University (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) and a Research Associate at CISTER Research Unit (Porto, Portugal). He is also leader of Cooperative Intelligent Networked Systems (COINS) research group. He has received his Ph.D. from the National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine (INPL) and INRIA/LORIA in 2004. Then, he has pursued his post-doctoral research in 2005/2006 at CISTER Research Unit on devising new communication architectures and mechanisms in order to improve the Quality-of-Service (QoS) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) based on COTS technologies. Currently, his research interests span over several areas related to Wireless Sensor Networks, Robotics, Localization and Tracking, Standard Protocols, Link Quality Estimation, etc. Anis Koubaa has been involved in several research project and international working groups, in particular chair of the TinyOS ZigBee Working Group. He has also been actively involved in the design and development of several open source toolset for experimentation with wireless sensor networks and IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee standard protocols, such as RadiaLE, open-ZB, Z-Monitor and others. He has more than 80 publications in several high-quality international journals and conferences. He has received several awards including the Research Excellence Prize from Al-Imam University in 2010, SensorNets Best Demo Awards in 2009, ECRTS 2007 Best Paper Award in 2007. His H-Index is 19.</note>

From October 2008 to July 2010, Maissa was a Master Student subscribed to the “SINT” (Systèmes d’Information et Nouvelles Technologies/ Information Systems and New Technologies) Research Master at the Faculty of Economics and Management of Sfax-Tunisia. In the 27th of July 2010, Maissa has successfully defended her Master Thesis titled: “An Experimental Study for the Performance Evaluation and Optimization of Link Quality Estimators in Wireless Sensor Networks” which has won the very prestigious Best CONET/EWSN Master Award, in EWSN 2011 conference. Currently, Maissa is a Research Assistant at the Faculty of Economics and Management of Sfax (FSEGS) and a PhD Student subscribed to ReDCAD research unit at the National School of Engineering of Sfax (Research Unit on Development and Control of Distributed Applications).</note>

<Heading>Anis Koubâa</Heading>
<Para>is an Associate Professor and Networking Consultant at Al-Imam Mohamed bin Saudi University (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) and a Research Associate at CISTER Research Unit (Porto, Portugal). He is also leader of Cooperative Intelligent Networked Systems (COINS) research group. He has received his Ph.D. from the National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine (INPL) and INRIA/LORIA in 2004. Then, he has pursued his post-doctoral research in 2005/2006 at CISTER Research Unit on devising new communication architectures and mechanisms in order to improve the Quality-of-Service (QoS) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) based on COTS technologies. Currently, his research interests span over several areas related to Wireless Sensor Networks, Robotics, Localization and Tracking, Standard Protocols, Link Quality Estimation, etc. Anis Koubaa has been involved in several research project and international working groups, in particular chair of the TinyOS ZigBee Working Group. He has also been actively involved in the design and development of several open source toolset for experimentation with wireless sensor networks and IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee standard protocols, such as RadiaLE, open-ZB, Z-Monitor and others. He has more than 80 publications in several high-quality international journals and conferences. He has received several awards including the Research Excellence Prize from Al-Imam University in 2010, SensorNets Best Demo Awards in 2009, ECRTS 2007 Best Paper Award in 2007. His H-Index is 19.

From October 2008 to July 2010, Maissa was a Master Student subscribed to the “SINT” (Systèmes d’Information et Nouvelles Technologies/ Information Systems and New Technologies) Research Master at the Faculty of Economics and Management of Sfax-Tunisia. In the 27th of July 2010, Maissa has successfully defended her Master Thesis titled: “An Experimental Study for the Performance Evaluation and Optimization of Link Quality Estimators in Wireless Sensor Networks” which has won the very prestigious Best CONET/EWSN Master Award, in EWSN 2011 conference. Currently, Maissa is a Research Assistant at the Faculty of Economics and Management of Sfax (FSEGS) and a PhD Student subscribed to ReDCAD research unit at the National School of Engineering of Sfax (Research Unit on Development and Control of Distributed Applications).

The main objective is to pave the way towards a deep understanding of the main localization techniques, and unify their descriptions. Furthermore, this review paper provides a complete overview on the most relevant localization and geolocation techniques. Also, we present the most important metrics for measuring the accuracy of localization approaches, which is meant to be the gap between the real location and its estimate. Finally, we present open issues and research challenges pertaining to localization. We believe that this review paper will represent an important and complete reference of localization techniques in CPS for researchers and practitioners and will provide them with an added value as compared to previous surveys.</Para>
