Abstract
Abstract: In this chapter we put the discussion into the perspective of the theory of elliptic surfaces. In order to make the exposition more self-contained, we give full proofs of all the basic facts about elliptic surfaces. Because many of these basic facts are highly nontrivial, this chapter has grown into a small book within the book.
