Abstract
Still little is known about the extraordinary exuberance of the chanted liturgical poems composed during the Carolingian liturgical renaissance under the patronage of Charlemagne and the Frankish monks of his entourage like Alcuin, Theodolfus of Orléans and Benedict of Aniane. Paulinus II, patriarch of Aquileia and author of the hymn "Ubi caritas", which is sung on Maundy Thursday, also appears on the scene at this time as an excellent composer of rhythmical chants.
