Abstract
In confrontation with the archaeological discoveries in Paderborn of the last decades not only archaeologists have got more questions than answers. For the interpretation of the great Carolingian buildings, whose foundations were found during the excavations, historians were demanded. Fierce discussions had taken place among two parties. The first believed that the excavations of Paderborn are identical with the hitherto missing Urbs Karoli. The second party insisted on the traditional interpretation of the literary sources. An exact research on the literary sources of the Carolingian times shows that the annals, especially the ,Vita Karoli Magni', are interpreted historiography. Our view of history is mislead by them. The article shows the consequence for the history of mission in Westfalia and for the research on the early time of the Paderbornian ecclesiastical history.
