Abstract

This article refers in the first instance to a software package produced by the authors in response to the need to prepare second-year undergraduates for the study of medieval texts in the original Old French. This package was based on a Cognate Language Teacher program developed by the Computing Services Unit at London University Queen Mary and Westfield College. MedFrench's facilities enable beginners to recognize the variant forms represented by the medieval stage of the language by specific reference to modern French, and provde a series of glosses for every word in a given text-extract, ensuring for students a secure learning environment. MedFrench will be upgraded by the addition of more advanced texts. It does not, however, have the full potential to open up to students a wider world of medieval literature and society. The authors are therefore moving to develop a complementary program more equipped to deal with matters of medieval text stylistics on the one hand, and on the other the contextual culture of the Middle Ages. This program is being developed through the GUIDE 3. 1 authoring package operating in a Microsoft Windows environment; and the test of the paper describes the initial stages of this hypertext project, illustrated with particular reference to points of Old French syntax (which MedFrench was not best equipped to cover).
