Abstract
Eighteen astronomical observations from Western Europe as recorded in several historical sources from the ninth century are confirmed by retrocalculation. Carolingian astronomy was based on the motions of sun and moon and served mainly as a means of calendar computation in the time of Charlemagne. Subsequently eclipses and comets (but not planets' constellations) were interpreted in a specific astrological manner. A recent hypothesis of three fictitious centuries in the historiography of the early middle age is disproved.
