Comparée aux autres pièces de l'unique ms. qui la transmet (dont un faux: le Credo de Léon III) et aux écrits d'Adémar de Chabannes, la lettre se révèle une production probable de ce faussaire qui l'aurait fabriquée pour attaquer les Grecs, montrer en Charlemagne « le dernier empereur » et réagir contre les peurs apocalyptiques (en appendice : la lettre des moines et celle du pape à Charlemagne)</div>
