Abstract
Le témoignage offert par les sources carolingiennes concernant la liturgie du temps de Charlemagne a donné lieu à une légende selon laquelle le pape Grégoire le Grand serait l'auteur du texte et de la musique. Aussi, cette authentique liturgie romaine était censée avoir été importée directement dans le royaume carolingien. La recherche historique tend à montrer comment ce mythe officiel fut élaboré. Elle propose une image beaucoup plus complexe mettant l'accent sur l'activité créative dans les monastères royaux francs. Il existe un jeu d'interactions entre idées politiques, religieuses et artistiques ainsi que des débats sur la signification symbolique de la ville de Rome
