Abstract
We demonstrate how the processes of grammaticalisation have transformed the Latin noun casa “hut; house” into an entirely different part of speech: the modern preposition chez. In the last decade grammaticalisation theory has been debated as linguists continue to grapple with definitions of grammaticalisation and what constitutes a valid counter-example to the tendency of unidirectionality. We propose that the relatively recent and specialised noun chez-soi “home” may represent a challenge to the unidirectionality hypothesis.

In the last decade grammaticalisation theory has been debated as linguists continue to grapple with definitions of grammaticalisation and what constitutes a valid counter-example to the tendency of unidirectionality. We propose that the relatively recent and specialised noun chez-soi
“home” may represent a challenge to the unidirectionality hypothesis.</p>
