<p>First published in 1989 (Textes littéraires français, 368), this republication of Cesare Segre's edition of
<italic>La Chanson de Roland</italic>
(Milan, 1971) with translated apparatus and new glossary is something of a curiosity. Despite the interesting (and sometimes debatable) innovations of Segre's final critical text, the present volume is rather pointless without the generous variants and additional
<italic>laisses</italic>
from the other manuscripts which, printed in the immediate vicinity of the critical text, constituted the primary importance and utility of the original Italian edition. In the volume under review, the apparatus at the foot of the page has been reduced to variants from the Oxford manuscript and an indication of the justification for the intervention. The rest of the apparatus was relegated to a second volume in the 1989 printing, but this was not sent for review. Indeed, there is no indication on the cover or the title page that this is the first of a two-volume set. If the Italian edition could be criticized for being somewhat cumbersome and volume

of the French version praised for increased readability, one must wonder whether the translation of the apparatus and its republication were at all necessary. There are plenty of readable and scholarly texts of the Oxford version of
<italic>La Chanson de Roland</italic>
, most recently that of Ian Short in the Lettres Gothiques series (with modern French translation), and any scholar interested enough to want to consult Segre's extraordinary variants and discussions of the textual tradition will surely be able to cope with the Italian. The economics of textbook publishing may play a role here, and perhaps even the physical restraints of a small format series (which renders recent multi-volume editions of the lengthy prose
<italic>Lancelot</italic>
and the prose
<italic>Tristan</italic>
in the Textes littéraires français and the Classiques français du Moyen Âge, respectively, rather inconvenient tohandle). That said, the original Italian publication is probably long out of print and difficult to obtain, and the French version — providing the second volume is reprinted — will provide a service to those wishing to have immediate access to Segre's invaluable apparatus.</p>
