Abstract
The Scientific and Technological Information (STI) strategy of the European Commission addresses policies for scientific information and related ICT infrastructures. Significant progress has been made since the start of FP7 while ensuring a good communication with stakeholders and coordination with European Member States. Leading by example has been a major concern and therefore the European Commission launched concrete initiatives such as the FP7 Open Access Pilot addressing the issues of access to the EC funded research results. This paper summarises the history of EC STI policy since 2007 when a Communication2 on Scientific Information in the Digital Age was first published. It highlights the current emphasis on open access, sustainable preservation, and on building reliable and participatory e-infrastructures that give rise to an 'online European Research Area'. More coherence and better coordinated national policies and Union wide infrastructures are at the core of the EC strategy to achieve the policy goals in a cost effective way.
