Abstract

If high discharge levels in sewers coincide with high water levels in running waters this can lead either to a backflow of water into the sewers or the overloading and pollution of smaller running waters. On the basis of measurements for running waters and simulated discharges in sewer systems, the coincident probability of high discharges in both was determined. On average, during 40 % of all high water events in running waters, combined sewage will be discharged from a stormwater overflow (or 85 % of events if there is a stormwater settling tank). The results vary, depending above all on the characteristics of the catchment area. It is also found that the simple multiplication of the individual probabilities usually leads to a very conservative estimate.
