Abstract
Studies of illocutionary functions in adult-child talk have typically determined a single function for utterances in an interaction. Low reliabilities and dissatisfaction with the level of analysis have led to critiques of codes. This article examines the methodological and theoretical problems of such coding by exploring what thirty subjects agree on and disagree on when coding, using both a single-choice and an open-choice paradigm. Results lead to a discussion of the implications of ambiguity and multifunctionality for investigating functions of talk.
