Abstract
Summary: The binocular functions of 530 squinting children with a visual acuity of not less than 5/10 (0.5) in the squinting eye, have been examined in connection with the age of onset, the duration and the type of squint (strabismus alternans and strabismus unilateralis). In those cases with an age of onset before 2 years, the best results were obtained when the duration of squint was not longer than 2 years, even though these children were too young for orthoptic treatment. In those cases with a later age of onset, early operation was found to have a less significant influencenon the binocular function.
